U.S. Jobless Claims Drop to Near 49-Year Low
The strength of the labor market was reinforced by a report on the numbers of Americans filing for unemployment benefits, which dropped to a near 49-year low last week. Not only does that bode well for continued economic growth, it could also lead to wage growth, which in turn, could encourage consumer spending.
The Labor Department’s initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 207,000 for the week ended Sept. 29. The numbers had been skewed by the mid-September arrival of Hurricane Florence, which hit North and South Carolina. Applications fell to 202,000 during the week ended Sept. 15, the lowest level reported since November 1969.
The four-week moving average of initial claims rose 500 to 207,000 last week, which is considered a better measure of labor market trends because it evens out week-to-week volatility.
