U.S. 281 Expansion Begins
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched construction on the expansion of U.S. Hwy. 281. The increased capacity, under TxDOT’s Texas Clear Lanes initiatives, will help ease congestion throughout the San Antonio area.
The project’s first phase will add non-toll express lanes between Loop 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway. The second phase, scheduled to launch in 2019, will continue the road from Stone Oak Parkway into Comal County, just to the north of Bexar County.
Funding for the project is coming by way of Proposition 7, which voters passed in 2015, to direct a portion of the state’s general sales and use tax (as well as motor vehicle sales and rental taxes) to the state’s highway fund. San Antonio’s funding totals $170.3 million.
