TxDOT Holds Virtual Open House on El Paso Corridor Project
The design phase and first public comment period for the proposed, multimillion-dollar expansion and remake of Interstate 10’s Downtown El Paso segment got underway Thursday with a virtual open house. The project, under the auspices of the Texas Department of Transportation’s El Paso District office, might entail demolishing several city blocks of buildings, the El Paso Times reported.
The proposed project, extending 5.6 miles from Executive Center Boulevard to Copia Street, has a preliminary estimated cost of $750 million, a TxDOT spokeswoman told the El Paso Times. That estimate didn’t include the cost of the possible acquisition of properties bordering the highway to allow for adding more lanes and proposed gateways on each side of I-10.
TxDOT’s Reimagine I-10 study identified the Downtown project as the highest priority along 55 miles of I-10 stretching from Anthony, at the New Mexico border, to near Tornillo in far East El Paso County.
