Trying Again: Land Code Rewrite Begins March 26
In August 2018, Austin’s city council put an end to CodeNEXT, the city’s controversial, years-long, million-dollar project that would have rewritten the metro’s land development use code. Seven months later, the council is ready to try again.
City manager Spencer Cronk was charged to move forward on a code rewrite. The rules about what can and cannot be built in the city — and where — haven’t been revised in 35 years. In a March 15, 2019 memo to city council members, Cronk noted that completing a policy direction phase was the first step to creating a land-use plan that would be effective.
Cronk noted that, during the March 26, 2019 City Council Work Session, he is planning to walk the council members through policy questions, and that items will be added to future agendas to “discuss and take action on these policy questions.”
