Trump’s Budget is Mixed for Construction
President Donald Trump unveiled his proposal for the 2018 budget. And, when it comes to the construction industry, the as-is budget can be best described as a mixed-bag.
On the one hand, proposed cuts include a 13% reduction in the Department of Transportation’s budget, as well as eliminating the Transportation Generating Economic Recover grant program, also known as TIGER. TIGER pays for discretionary road and rail projects. Other cuts include a $1 billion reduction to the Army Corps of Engineers, and a halt to the Federal Transportation Administration’s capital investment program.
The construction program that will receive funding under the president’s plan is the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Trump has requested $1.5 billion for the project in 2017, and $2.6 billion for 2018. The next step is the Congressional appropriations process, which might bring change to some of the items.
