Tribal Group Plans to Purchase Closed Oregon City Paper Mill Along Willamette River
The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde plans to acquire the shuttered Blue Heron Paper Co. mill site in Oregon City, OR. Tacoma, WA-based investor George Heidgerken purchased the site along the Willamette River in 2014 for $2.2 million.
The former 23-acre mill site is being eyed for mixed-use development, as well as home to The Willamette Falls Legacy Project river walk on a site easement (pictured).
Grand Ronde Chairwoman Cheryle A. Kennedy told the Oregonian, “I think it’s a great celebration that an ancient people is able to acquire property where our grandfathers fished thousands of years ago.”
The tribal group has deep historical and cultural ties to the Willamette Falls. Members have fished there for generations, and recently constructed a fishing platform at the site. The group is also considering acquiring another nearby site upstream, which has 1.5-miles of river frontage.
