St. John’s Square Gets HDRC Approval

Austin-based Weal Development received initial approval from San Antonio’s Historic Design and Review Commission (HDRC) to build an apartment complex near downtown’s La Villita Historic Arts Village. The project, dubbed St. John’s Square, will offer 250 apartments, an eight-floor parking garage, and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.

The eight-story project will be built on 1.3 acres at Nueva and St. Mary’s streets, land which was leased from the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Weal Development’s Dennis McDaniel told the San Antonio Express-News that he hopes to break ground on the $30 million complex by the end of 2019.

At least 20% of the units will be set aside for households earning 80% of the area median income or lower. The affordable housing component means the San Antonio Housing Authority is seeking $50 million in tax-exempt bonds, as well as state housing tax credits, to finance the project.
