Speedier Development Approval Process Proposed
A new plan that is expected to expedite approvals for affordable housing is being proposed by California Governor Jerry Brown. The latest state budget proposal includes language that Brown believes will encourage construction in the segment.
The plan will allow developers to skip over parts of locally-mandated review and permitting processes for projects with 20% of units designated affordable. That number drops to just 10% if the housing is located near a transit hub. Developers are not exempt from current zoning restrictions, which may limit the plan’s effectiveness in some areas.
Urban policy experts say the new plan may help cities that have already given lip service to higher-density zoning, but don’t intend to see it through to completion.
