South Korean Company Commences Construction on $1.7B EV Battery Factory in Georgia
SK Innovation, a South Korean developer of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) kicked off construction on a new EV battery factory near the city of Commerce in Jackson County, GA. Located on 283 acres inside they city’s industrial complex, the $1.67 billion facility – SK Innovation’s first EV battery factory in the U.S. – will generate 2,000 jobs by 2025 and boast a production capacity of 9.8GWh beginning in 2022.
SK Group’s Jae-won Chey says, “Today’s groundbreaking marks an important step in SK Innovation’s blossoming partnership with the U.S., the state of Georgia and global automakers throughout the region whose collective confidence in our technology helped spur this investment.”
The EV battery cells produced from the Commerce factory will be supplied to major global automakers with manufacturing operations in the U.S.
Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp notes, “SK Innovation’s plant represents one of the largest single investments in a job creating initiative in Georgia’s history.”
