SOM-Designed Landmark Will House Indiana U’s Architecture Program

The architecturally significant former Republic Newspaper building in Columbus, IN has sold to Indiana University at Bloomington, which will repurpose it as a home for its Master of Architecture degree program. The property was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Myron Goldsmith as part of a master plan devised for the city by SOM in the 1960s, and was designated a national landmark in 2012.

“The program will help meet the considerable national and local need for professional architects and designers,” said IU president Michael McRobbie. “Here in Indiana alone, the need for architects is projected to grow by 15% over the next decade.”

IU’s School of Art, Architecture + Design will occupy the building starting in August, and begin offering courses in the new architecture degree program in the fall semester.
