Solar-Powered Plane Takes Flight
It’s a bird, it’s a plane… yes, it’s a plane, but it’s not your average airliner. Solar Impulse 2, an experimental solar-powered airplane, took off in Hawaii after a nine-month repair delay.
Using power solely from the sun, the goal is to circumnavigate the globe. Previously, the airplane flew from Japan to Hawaii, but had to stop as its batteries overheated.
Pilot Bertrand Piccard is flying the plane to California, where pilot Andre Borschberg will continue as they alternate legs of the journey. If all goes well, they will complete the global flight in 10 stages, ending in Abu Dhabi.
