Smith County Commissioners Examine County Facility Needs

Smith County, TX Commissioners Court is starting to examine the improvement of county facilities. Commissioners approved a five-year facilities plan in 2012, with the plan going through in 2016.

Plans under discussion include purchasing the Gulf State Lumber Co. at 302 Line Rd. The company shut down in 2014, and the county is considering moving the facility services department into the building. Other considerations involve what to do with the Carlton Hotel at 6502 Old Jacksonville Hwy., and whether to relocate auto registration services from the Cotton Belt Building at 1517 W. Front St. All three properties are in Tyler.

According to County Judge Nathaniel Moran, the first step is to determine what projects remain, and to develop a priority list for the 2017 fiscal year. A long-term plan can then be developed.
