Sit Tight, Parking Relief Could Happen
Anyone trying to find parking in downtown Austin knows that the spaces are inaccessible, too far from desired locations, or too expensive. Consulting firm Nelson/Nygaard indicated that 30,000 of the downtown area’s estimated 71,504 parking spaces are unused during peak times for these reasons.
But now the city of Austin and Downtown Austin Alliance are ready to implement 10 initiatives geared toward improving parking in the CBD. The initiatives include expanding an affordable parking program, installing real-time availability signage at all downtown public parking facilities, and a park-and-ride shuttle.
The first step will be to form a Parking Action Team, which will take responsibility of ensuring that the first 10 strategies recommended by Nelson/Nygaard are implemented. The Team, consisting of city officials, the DAA and the Austin Transportation Department among others, is expected to be formed immediately.
