SDSU Stadium Plan Heads for November Ballot

Enough signatures were collected to put San Diego State University’s plan to build a new stadium and satellite campus on the November election ballot. The City Clerk’s office verified the signatures backing a proposal for the Mission Valley site of the former Qualcomm Stadium.

Now, it is up to the city council to review and send the initiative to voters to decide.

The university is seeking to build a new Aztecs football stadium on the city-owned land of what was the former Chargers arena site. The plan also includes adding a satellite SDSU West campus with new classrooms, 1.6 million square feet of office space, 4,500 housing units, 95,000 square feet of retail, two hotels and up to 90 acres of parks.

A rival SoccerCity stadium proposal qualified for the ballot last year for a 22,500- to 33,500-capacity Major League Soccer stadium, with offices, housing, hotels, retail and parks.
