San Francisco Unwraps $551M Moscone Center Expansion

A $551 million expansion that added more than 500,000 square feet of connected exhibit space to San Francisco’s Moscone Center is now complete. City tourism officials gathered Thursday to unveil the renovations that resulted in a 21% boost in overall space.

The updated North and South facilities are connected via a pedestrian bridge, as well as a vast underground exhibit hall. The new modern space includes green features such as water recycling and energy-efficient lights, and can accommodate roughly 100,000 people.

Improvements were sought at the convention center that opened in 1981 in order to remain competitive. The expansion and 175,000 new convention visitors per year are expected to generate $20 million in increased annual hotel tax revenue.

San Francisco Travel’s Tom David told the San Francisco Chronicle, “Now we’re going to be back in the game to attract some of those large tech companies to come back.”
