San Francisco Reopens Businesses Shuttered for Months

Nearly six months after thousands of businesses across San Francisco were ordered to shut down in an effort to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus, many were allowed to reopen to customers on Monday. San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed, Dr. Grant Colfax, Director of Health, and Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu, co-Chair of the City’s Economic Recovery Task Force lifted the orders because the state loosened restrictions last week for counties such as San Francisco that had met new pandemic health goals.

Mayor Breed said, “I’m so glad we can move forward earlier than expected to reopen more businesses that have been closed since March. These businesses have been struggling, and starting Monday, they’ll finally be able to serve customers again, with the necessary safety precautions and modifications in place.”

Among the businesses that began welcoming customers back across the City on a day where skies brightened included hair salons, barber shops, massage services, nail salons, gyms and fitness centers. Hotels, outdoor family entertainment centers, drive-in entertainment such as outdoor movies, and outdoor tour buses and boats were also allowed to resume operations.

Additionally, community learning hubs for children who need support in distance learning, places of worship and political activities are now allowed.

Face coverings are required to be worn at all times by everyone involved, and businesses must reduce capacity, maintain safe distance between customers and adhere to strict sanitation practices.
