San Diego Mayor Approves Former Chargers Stadium Acquisition by SDSU

A stadium that formerly was the home of the NFL’s San Diego Chargers has officially been sold to San Diego State University paving the way for a $3.5-billion campus development. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer approved the sale of the 135-acre site for roughly $88 million. The City Council had previously approved the sale in June.

The property includes the stadium as well as surrounding land, where it plans to break ground on Aug. 17 on a new 35,000-seat SDSU football stadium. A 34-acre river park is set to be developed in conjunction with the new stadium.

The overall plan envisions creating a world-class university campus over 10 to 15 years with parks, stadium and mix of uses. There will be 1.6 million square feet of office and research space, as well as 86 acres of parks, recreation, and open space, including the river park, as well as 4,600 housing units, a 400-room hotel, and 95,000 square feet of campus retail.
