San Antonio Says No to GOP Convention

The city of San Antonio decided not to submit a bid to host the 2020 Republican National Convention. Though the economic benefits of hosting such an event could top $200 million, officials say the costs of hosting the GOP convention would outweigh any positives.

Republican party leaders requested a bid from San Antonio, with Ron Kaufman, the site-selection committee chairman, visiting the Alamo City in late March 2018. Following the lunch, city officials decided against hosting the convention. Then Brad Parscale, who is President Donald Trump’s current campaign manager and a former San Antonian, urged officials to reconsider.

In response, Mayor Ron Nirenberg convened an executive session to discuss the matter. “As a whole, the City Council did not feel it was worth it to move forward,” Nirenberg said, following the meeting. He added that the discussions centered on economic issues, rather than political ones. The decision also extends to the Democratic National Convention.
