San Antonio ISD Begins Internet Infrastructure Update
The San Antonio Independent School District began a months-long process to update its internet infrastructure, to increase capacity and speed. To that end, the school district will install almost 80 miles of fiber-optic cable, which will connect district campus and offices to one central high-speed network. The SAISD will control and operate that network.
The project is expected to be completed by June 2020, with students having access to it in time for the 2020-2021 school year. The fiber installation means students will be able to access the internet anywhere on campus, even on the playground and common areas, including classrooms.
Approximately $15 million in federal and state dollars is funding the upgrade. SAISD is picking up about 5% of the total bill.
