Rue21 Closing 400 Stores
Pittsburgh-based rue21 plans to close 400 stores across the country. The discount teen clothing retailer’s plans were shared via a Facebook post. Rue21 operated more than 1,200 stores in 48 states, prior to the announcement.
The company said, “it was a difficult but necessary decision. But the good news is we still have hundreds of locations across the country, and our website rue21.com, open for business!”
The chain’s growth strategy focused on locating stores in smaller, often underserved markets. Earlier this month, it was reported by Debtwire that the company was having difficulty paying its bills and was likely restructuring.
The timing of the store closings was not disclosed.
