Rough Rezoning Meeting in Long Island City
Residents of the Long Island City neighborhood lashed out at city officials Tuesday night in a public meeting to discuss the latest rezoning planned for the area.
About 100 “visibly frustrated” local people said the “LIC Core Neighborhood Plan” threatened to raise property values far past their ability to pay. The study seeks to create a mixed-use district situated between Sunnyside Yard and Queensbridge Houses.
Higher homes prices are explicitly part of the City’s new plan for the neighborhood. It plans to use the increased property tax income generated by rising values to help pay for a proposed streetcar line that will pass through the area.
