Riverside Opens Cost-Effective Homeless Shelters

Anaheim-based nonprofit City Net has created emergency shelters for up to 56 homeless individuals at the “Emergency Shelter Cabin Village” located at the City of Riverside’s homeless access center on Hulen Place.

City Net acquired 30 shed-sized domiciles from Washington-based Pallet Shelters that the nonprofit will operate with 10-12 employees, including case managers. Looking like tightly-packed aluminum sheds from the outside, the structures are eight feet long and eight feet wide, with two flannel-sheeted beds and a shared bookshelf. Touches of home hang on the interior walls, like signs with cursive script reading, “This is my happy place” or a painting of flowers.

Four of the domiciles comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Each unit is equipped with a heater and an air conditioner. Security will be provided, as will help with services such as laundry. The village has three bathrooms and showers.
