Rising Realty’s Chris Rising Previews Connect Los Angeles

By Dennis Kaiser

Connect Los Angeles is just around the corner on March 21stat the Hotel Indigo Downtown Los Angeles. The planned line-up includes five deep dives into the opportunities and challenges across asset classes, the future of work, financing today’s deals, legislation and the economy. Leading up to the conference we asked Rising Realty Partners’ Chris Rising to share his thoughts about the commercial real estate market in our latest 3 CRE Q&A.

Q: You are one of the few–if not the only–developers talking about the economic benefits of addressing climate change. Why is this important and what are the potential cost savings?
A:
Real estate accounts for 40% of the world’s energy consumption and one third of all carbon emissions. We feel it’s our responsibility to help bring those numbers down— there are so many simple things that we can do as real estate investors and developers to increase sustainability while saving money at the same time. Evaluating and adjusting the usage of your HVAC, implementing recycling programs, upgrading lighting fixtures, and reducing water waste are just a few examples.

Q: How are you incorporating new technology in order to make your buildings more efficient and environmentally friendly?
A
: One of the first things we do when we acquire a building is assess the overall efficiency of the building—financially, technologically, and environmentally. Utilizing a technology such as Carbon Lighthouse, we’re able to collect data and analytics on an asset’s energy usage, identify hidden inefficiencies and potential solutions, and implement the best solution to improve.

Q: Are there any upcoming Rising projects that we can look forward to?
A:
The Trust Building is one of my favorite projects to date. A Parkinson and Parkinson designed architectural masterpiece, The Trust Building is the largest restoration project on Spring Street in DTLA. We have some exciting announcements coming soon. We also just announced that Barbara Bestor of Bestor Architecture will be our architect-in-residence for tenants to use to design their space.
