RFP Calls for Solar Installations on City-Owned Parcels

The Emanuel administration has issued an RFP to develop solar energy installations on vacant city-owned land, primarily on Chicago’s South Side. Approximately 30 acres of land in the communities of Austin, Englewood, West Pullman, Riverdale and South Deering—all vacant brownfields with no slated plans for future development—are being offered for solar development.

“This project takes vacant land and transforms it into something that will be positive for the community, keeping us one step ahead in our commitment to renewable energy sources,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The selected developer(s) will own, operate and maintain the ground-mounted solar systems on the vacant land at no cost to the city. Respondents to the RFP are requested to meet MBE/WBE and Workforce Development goals, and a minimum of 50% of the total work hours on construction must be performed by city residents. Construction is planned to begin in 2019.
