Renovation Underway on Historic Tomato Bowl Stadium
Renovation is underway on the 78-year-old Tomato Bowl Stadium, which serves as the football field for the Jacksonville Independent School District’s Indians football team. When this East Texas stadium re-opens in April 2019, the field will be relocated 40 yards to the east, seating will be updated and expanded on the visitors’ side, and new locker rooms will be in place.
And, according to JISD superintendent Chad Kelly, the stadium will be available for more than high-school football games. Other organizations will be able to rent the stadium for tournaments. “They’ll stay here in our hotels, eat at our restaurants,” he told the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
The stadium, which is one of five recognized by the Texas Football Hall of Fame, is being renovated at a $15 million price tag. It’s also one of the last remaining downtown stadiums in Texas.
