Related Midwest’s MXU Would Add 78th Neighborhood to Chicago’s 77

Related Midwest has unveiled a master plan for a 62-acre mixed-use project on the Chicago River that would be among the most ambitious ever seen here. Known as “The 78”, for its plan to add one more to Chicago’s existing slate of 77 neighborhoods, the MXU on a former rail yard would encompass some 13 million square feet of residential, retail and office, along with half a mile of continuous riverfront linking downtown to Chinatown.

“Chicago is a global and ethnically diverse city with strong neighborhoods at its heart,” said Curt Bailey, president of Related Midwest. “We’ve spent years studying what makes those neighborhoods great and are using those attributes to influence the design of The 78.”

Should the ambitious project get underway, though, it won’t be built overnight. Presenting the plan to a community meeting late last week, Related Midwest officials estimated a 20-year timeframe for completion.
