Related Midwest Eyes 10,000 Apartments for Riverfront MXU

Connect Apartments is coming up on June 26th in Los Angeles. Here’s a link to find out more about the conference and to register.

A zoning application filed with the city reveals some previously undisclosed details about the scope of Related Midwest’s plans for its The 78 mixed-use project on the banks of the Chicago River. The developer seeks permission to build up to 10,000 apartments on the 62-acre parcel, more than twice the 4,600 units planned by the site’s previous ownership.

“The proposal calls for a maximum number of units, which will give us flexibility to design the best development for the community as we build this project over the next 10 to 20 years,” Related Midwest told Crain’s Chicago Business.

Still up in the air is the square footage of office the 13-million-square-foot development would contain. That may hinge in part on whether the city’s bid to land Amazon’s second North American headquarters is successful, thereby catalyzing future office demand.
