Reimagined Starter Home Chosen in Design Competition

A jury assembled by the Chicago Housing Policy Task Force has selected the Adaptable House by Perkins+Will architect Greg Tamborino as the winner of the Disruptive Design competition.

Related Midwest, whose Amy Mayer was one of the jurors, will build two houses based on Tamborino’s design—one in the West Side neighborhood of West Humboldt Park, and the other in the South Side’s Bronzeville neighborhood. Construction is slated for completion in 2020.

The competition asked architects from all over the world to submit their concepts for affordable, owner-occupied single-family or two-flat starter homes that included a wealth-building component, i.e. a rentable unit or live/work space.

The three finalists spent six weeks refining their initial designs, with feedback from the city of Chicago’s Department of Buildings and the Department of Planning and Development. They also presented their initial and final designs to residents of West Humboldt Park and Bronzeville.
