Region’s Mayors Want Gas Tax Hike for Roads, Transit
Northeastern Illinois’ Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, including Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel, is calling for a gas tax increase to help fund a statewide transportation capital bill. The state’s gas tax has remained flat since 1990, and there hasn’t been a statewide capital bill since 2009.
“All funding options need to be on the table,” said John Ostenburg, chairman of the Mayors Caucus and Mayor of Park Forest. “Revenue sources that have traditionally funded roads and transit in the past can support our needs today. However, with the continued emergence of new transportation technologies, they won’t last long.”
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) says the region needs $24 billion in added revenue through 2050 to maintain the current system, without addressing a backlog of projects to reach a state of good repair. Additionally, CMAP estimates that another $32 billion is needed to improve the condition, and enhance and expand the current system.
