Public Review Continues for Obama Center Plan

Ahead of next month’s presentation to the City Council by the Obama Foundation, city officials updated community stakeholders on potential changes to Jackson Park in view of plans to build the Obama Presidential Center there. The March 29 briefing was the second of four scheduled meetings under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Although the foundation says the center will represent “a new landmark for the South Side and an economic engine for the city of Chicago,” community members expressed concern that the review process is being rushed. Margaret Schmid, co-founder of Jackson Park Watch, told attendees, “They send out this 1,000-page report, give you 10 days to read it and a month to comment.”

The Obama Foundation’s Michael Strautmanis said the foundation would participate in every review process as required, “and adjust our plans in accordance with the result of the processes and community input.”
