Portland to Lease Waterfront for Homeless Shelter

The Portland, OR city council has given the go-ahead to lease 14.5 acres of waterfront industrial property at the Port of Portland for use as a massive homeless shelter. The city’s Bureau of Environmental Services will lease the property, at 2400 N.W. Front Ave., to the Portland Housing Bureau, which will use it to eventually house up to 1,400 homeless people.

The city council also passed a resolution to help move forward a temporary shelter, with services to house up to approximately 400 people.

The idea of a large homeless shelter came from local developers, inspired by the $103 million Haven for Hope program in San Antonio Texas, a 22-acre campus offering services and shelter. A similar Portland plan would be called Oregon Trail of Hope.
