Portland Selected as First U.S. City for Icelandic KEX Hotel
Iceland-based hotelier KEX plans to open its first social hostel and gastropub property in the U.S. in Portland this fall. The development team of the 156-room KEX Portland includes KEX Iceland, ChefStable Group and Greenlight Development.
KEX Portland is envisioned as a design-forward, budget-conscious hotel featuring a 5,000-square-foot, ground-floor restaurant and flexible performance space, as well as a rooftop bar. KEX’s private and shared rooms will emphasize comfort, functionality and sustainability that reflects the Nordic mindset.
The hotel will be housed in a fully-restored and updated 1912 building at 100 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. on Portland’s Central Eastside. The hotel’s interior will incorporate an array of imported pieces from places like the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Egypt. The décor will mix old and the new, while maintaining the character of the original construction.
One of Iceland’s top chefs, Ólafur (Oli) Ágústsson, will serve as Culinary Director for KEX’s food and on-site catering program.
