Portland Baseball Stadium Developer Needs More Time to Study Riverfront Site
A group of investors seeking to build a baseball stadium as a key component of a larger mixed-use project at a Northwest Portland marine cargo terminal want more time to study the site. The Portland Diamond Project requested and received a six-month extension before entering an exclusive rights agreement with the Port of Portland. It will pay the Port, which owns the terminal, $37,500 a month for up to six months during the extension.
The development group includes former Nike executive Craig Cheek, former Trail Blazers broadcaster Mike Barrett, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, Grammy Award-winning singer Ciara. The investors plan to use the stadium deal to attract a Major League Baseball team to the Rose City.
The Terminal 2 port site sits northwest of the Fremont Bridge along the Willamette River, and is no longer needed as a marine terminal. The location faces challenges including lack of public transportation and infrastructure ideal for stadium crowds, as well as zoning issues.
