Port Corpus Christi: A Wind Energy Hub

Mention “wind energy in Texas” and what might come to mind are the slowly-spinning windmills drivers view as they travel along Interstate 20 through West Texas. But those turbine blades and tower segments have to come from somewhere – and it seems as though the South Texas Port Corpus Christi has quietly elbowed its way into becoming an important logistics hub for the growing Texas industry.

The port reached a wind energy milestone in early December 2017, receiving its 3,000^th energy components shipment for the year. The port received 2,603 of such components in 2015, and 2,075 in 2016.

Port officials approved a contract to add 25 more acres of laydown yard to store the massive wind turbine components and breakbulk cargo. The first 10-acre phase is expected to be completed by the end of Q2 2018. The remaining laydown yard will be completed within the following months.
