Port Corpus Christi: A Wind Energy Hub

Mention “wind energy in Texas” and what might come to mind are the slowly-spinning windmills drivers view as they travel along Interstate 20 through West Texas. But those turbine blades and tower segments have to come from somewhere – and it seems as though the South Texas Port Corpus Christi has quietly elbowed its way into becoming an important logistics hub for the growing Texas industry.

The port reached a wind energy milestone in early December 2017, receiving its 3,000th energy components shipment for the year. The port received 2,603 of such components in 2015, and 2,075 in 2016.

Port officials approved a contract to add 25 more acres of laydown yard to store the massive wind turbine components and breakbulk cargo. The first 10-acre phase is expected to be completed by the end of Q2 2018. The remaining laydown yard will be completed within the following months.
