Port Approves $1.2B Seaport Redev Team

San Diego’s port approved the bi-coastal development team selected to transform Seaport Village into a $1.2-billion waterfront destination. Seaport San Diego is envisioned to emerge over the coming decade with three hotels, shops and restaurants, a signature 480-foot observation tower, a partially underground aquarium, 30 acres of parks, beaches and promenades, as well as upgraded boating facilities.

The 1HWY1 development team includes Protea Waterfront Development, a partnership between San Diego-based Gafcon and the owners of Rancho Santa Fe, CA’s Rancho Valencia hotel. Others involved are RCI Marine Group, OdySea, and ThrillCorp.

Plans include 1,075 hotel rooms, including a 350-micro-room Yotel, San Diego’s first Virgin-branded property, and a 225-room Freehand hostel. The developer is seeking to start construction in 2020, with phased completions slated between 2022 and 2025.
