Police Academy Project Advances with Plan Commission Approval
The Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday approved a 30-acre campus for the Public Safety Training Academy at 4301 W. Chicago Ave. in West Garfield Park. It includes about 500,000 square feet of office and training space, two commercial spaces fronting Chicago Avenue and a freestanding wireless communications tower.
This past November, the Emanuel administration entered into exclusive negotiations with a joint venture led by AECOM for the design and construction of the academy, and introduced an ordinance in February to grant the contract to the JV. City Council approval will be required for the contract to be finalized.
When the negotiations were announced, Mayor Rahm Emanuel hailed the project as a “new economic engine coming to the West Side.” The administration had been working since late 2017 to select a developer on the $85-million academy project.
Construction on the project is expected to take 24 to 36 months.
