Physicians’ Practice Planning Medical Student Housing

The Southwest Oregon Independent Practice Association acquired an abandoned hospital in Coos Bay, OR, on the state’s southwest coast. And, across the street, Western Oregon Advanced Health (WOAH) indicated that it is in the process of developing plans for a facility that would house Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) students doing rotations in the area. OHSU opened a Coos Bay campus in 2015 to focus on rural health.

The parking lot and residences would go north in three phases. Assuming that the practice association can close on the hospital at 790 Commercial Ave. in November 2017, the first phase would be the building’s demolition. Phases two and three would involve building residential housing and smaller condos for long-term residents, respectively.
