Pepperdine, Dun & Bradstreet Survey: Businesses Confident, Worry About Economy
A survey released Monday by researchers at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio Business School and Dun & Bradstreet Corp. revealed that owners of small and mid-sized companies are largely upbeat about prospects, though carry a bit of trepidation about the economy.
Researchers report nearly 80% of companies with revenue of up to $100 million expect 2019’s performance to exceed last year’s. Companies in the category of up to $5 million in revenue say they expect to generate 9% more annual revenue, up slightly from 8.9% from a Q4 2018 survey. Interestingly, companies in the mid-sized category (revenue between $5 million to $100 million) report less enthusiasm. Just 7.5% forecast higher revenue in 2019, compared to 8.5% previously.
Still, companies indicating they plan to hire in the next six months was up slightly, with 31% saying they did not plan to hire, down from 36% in 4Q. One of the biggest hinderances for those not planning to hire is uncertainty over the economy, with nearly a third reporting such worries.
