Pandemic Puts Aon Center Observatory Project on Pause
The Aon Center has delayed plans to build an observatory with a thrill ride atop Chicago’s third-tallest skyscraper, the Chicago Tribune reported. Originally slated to begin this fall, the $185-million project will get underway in the second quarter of 2021 instead, with a 2023 opening.
JLL’s Matthew Amato, who manages the Aon Center for 601W Cos., told the Tribune the project was halted to provide more time for a potential treatment or cure for COVID-19, and to see if any aspects of the plan will need to be redesigned.
“It involves putting a lot of people into elevators to get them to the observatory, which isn’t possible right now,” Amato said. “Because of the pandemic and the social distancing requirements that would be necessary for a venue such as that, we have to make sure that, before we have to make any changes, we would understand what they might be.”
