Oregon’s Salem Health Plans $235M Expansion

Salem Health plans to build a new seven-story, $235-million building expansion at Salem Hospital in Salem, OR. The project, funded via a mix of cash reserves and long-term debt financing, will add 150 beds to the facility on Oak Street by 2022.

The space is being built to handle the growing needs of the Willamette Valley’s aging population, which is expected to use more medical services in the future. Seniors make up about 20% of the population in the greater Salem area today, but account for more than half of hospital stays.

Roughly 90,000 people over the age of 60 live in the hospital’s service area. That number is expected to grow to about 130,000 by 2035. Salem Health’s James Parr told the Salem Reporter, “That’s going to put a demand on all kinds of services in Marion and Polk county.”

Construction is expected to begin in early next year, and the tower will begin housing patients in summer 2022.
