Oregon’s Cannabis Sector Creates 2,000-Plus Jobs
New Economy Consulting, in partnership with Whitney Economics LLC, has issued a report detailing the economics of Oregon’s cannabis retail sector. Calling it “very promising,” the economists reported that, during 2015, the sector created 2,156 jobs, and generated an overall economic impact of $300 million.
To obtain its data, researchers conducted telephone and online surveys between December 2015-January 2016 of marijuana dispensaries registered with the Oregon Health Authority throughout the state of Oregon.
Both medical and recreational marijuana are legal in Oregon. The researchers pointed out that, with this study, they were “barely scratching the surface of the cannabis industry’s economic impact.” Future research studies will focus on production, processing, wholesale and ancillary sectors.
