Oregon Advances $795M Rose Quarter Improvement Project
The Oregon Transportation Commission voted to move forward on an environmental assessment for a $795-million project to widen and improve Interstate 5 through Portland. The Commission directed ODOT to continue to work with local government partners on actions the Commission approved in January for the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project.
Commission Chair Robert Van Brocklin says, “The Rose Quarter freeway improvements will reduce congestion, improve safety, and allow new transit facilities on the worst traffic bottleneck in the state and one of the most congested freeway corridors in the country.
The project adds auxiliary lanes and shoulders on the main north-south freeway and redesigns the multimodal local street network. The project also will improve community connections by redesigning overpasses and reconnecting neighborhood streets, enhancing public spaces, and promoting economic development opportunities.
Alternative design concepts are being explored for highway covers over I-5 capable of supporting multi-story structures. They are also looking at implementing congestion pricing in the Rose Quarter corridor to manage traffic demand and finance multimodal transportation improvements.
