Online Grocery Wars Heat Up with Albertsons’ Platform Modernization
The retail battle lines are getting increasingly more intriguing. Last week, Amazon dropped its $13.7-billion bombshell acquisition of Whole Foods. Now, one of the nation’s leading grocery chains announced plans to revamp its e-commerce system in an effort to better serve customers.
Albertsons Cos. is migrating and updating the online shopping system of its 2,300 supermarkets and stores in fiscal 2018. The systems upgrades will allow the retailer to use modern cloud systems such as Microsoft’s Azure.
The retailer will also update features on its mobile app and websites to make it easier for shoppers to sign up for accounts and make payments quicker.
To accomplish the task, Albertsons brought in an online retail leader from Macy’s and Levi Strauss & Co. to transform its systems. It is a process made more difficult given the different IT systems of multiple grocery store brands operating across its 35-state territory.
