NY-NJ Gateway Tunnel Project Fast-Tracked
The Gateway Tunnel Project – geared to improve railroad connections between New York and New Jersey – is on the fast track. Specifically, it’s estimated that the massive overhaul could start as early as 2019, after an environmental study has been concluded.
The project involves replacing one of the portal bridges and overhauling the existing Amtrak tunnels between New York and New Jersey. The tunnels, which are shared by New Jersey Transit, are more than a century old, and they suffered significant damage from Hurricane Sandy. Amtrak has secured the right-of-way for proposed new track lines, and will be building a concrete casing that runs under the Hudson Yards project.
If all goes according to plan, much of the project will be eligible for federal funding.
