NYCHA Agrees to Court-Appointed Supervision
The New York City Housing Authority has agreed to court-appointed supervision under a consent decree announced by U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman. The decree, announced concurrently with a civil complaint against NYCHA for longstanding health and safety violations, also requires the city to provide NYCHA with $1.2 billion in additional capital funding over the next five years, and $200 million per year until the problems are resolved.
“NYCHA has put its residents at risk,” said Berman. “Today’s unprecedented settlement will improve life for the 400,000 residents who call NYCHA home, while ensuring accountability, reform and oversight at this troubled institution.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday, “Decades of divestment by the federal and state governments, and decades of neglect by New York City government, have pushed our public housing system to the brink. I didn’t run for mayor to continue that history. I ran to help turn it around.”
