Northeastern U. to Open $100M Research Campus in Portland

Northeastern University and technology entrepreneur David Roux will launch a graduate education and research campus in Portland, ME. The Roux Institute has 10 founding partners; it’s being funded by a $100-million gift from Roux and his wife Barbara.

Scheduled to open in the spring, the Roux Institute will partner with leading employers in Maine and across the U.S. Its graduate degree and certificate programs will focus on the practical application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the digital and life sciences sectors. The institute is also intended to drive sustained economic growth in Portland, the state of Maine and northern New England.

“The impact of the Roux Institute will reverberate across the region for generations to come,” said Joseph E. Aoun, president of Boston-based Northeastern. “It will serve as a national model for expanding growth and innovation, and reducing inequality.”
