New Reagan Airport Concourse on Track for 2021 Opening

Even as the coronavirus pandemic has slowed air travel to a trickle and put numerous construction projects on pause, it hasn’t slowed Project Journey at Reagan National Airport.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said the new 14-gate north concourse at the Arlington, VA airport remains on schedule to open in July 2021, and will also be completed on budget, the Washington Business Journal reported.

The concourse will replace the current Gate 35X, through which passengers are funneled to buses that shuttle them to their planes. American Airlines and concessionaires are expected to begin fitting out their operational areas in January of next year.

National Hall, the airport’s dining and shopping hall, will be put behind new Transportation Security Administration screening checkpoints to allow ticketed, screened passengers to move freely between terminals. The $267-million project was slated to open next March, but will debut in the fourth quarter of 2021 instead.
