New Kosciuszko Bridge Opens 4 Years Ahead of Schedule

The second span of the Kosciuszko Bridge, spanning Newtown Creek between Brooklyn and Queens, was slated to open to traffic before rush hour on August 29.

The project to replace the 77-year-old Kosciuszko, completed four years ahead of schedule, was the first new major bridge crossing completed in the city since the Verrazzano Bridge opened in 1964. It replaced the existing structure with two cable-stayed bridges, one Queens-bound and the other Brooklyn-bound.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo credited the project’s early completion to the use of design-build. “Design-build says government is not going to design,” Cuomo said at a news conference Tuesday. “We give outlines of what we want, and transfer the design and construction to the private contractor.”

Cuomo also announced plans for a park under the Brooklyn side of the span. To be known as Under the K, the seven-acre expanse is expected to be open by next summer.
