New Bronzeville Span Advances City’s “Building on Burnham” Project
The latest project in the Emanuel administration’s Building on Burnham initiative broke ground, as city officials hoisted shovels to kick off the Oakwood Boulevard Bridge reconstruction project. The renovated bridge, replacing a span that dates from 1931, will improve Bronzeville community access to Lake Shore Drive and the Oakwood/41st Street Beach.
“Today, we are Building on Burnham’s vision for Chicago; breaking ground on a project to bring residents of the South Side to the shorelines of the lakefront,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel (pictured).
The bridge reconstruction marks the third of a series of five Chicago Department of Transportation projects to strengthen connections to the city’s lakefront for South Side residents. Still to come are a second bike and pedestrian bridge that will replace the outdated span at 43rd Street, and a project to reconstruct the vehicular bridge at 31st Street.
