New Ammunition for Housing Advocates
One-in-five students (20%) in the public school system was homeless in the Highbridge and Grand Concourse neighborhoods of the Bronx (Districts 26 and 9) during the 2015-2016 school year.
School districts located in the Bronx, northern Manhattan and central Brooklyn have the largest numbers of homeless students. An additional 6%–7% of the students in these areas were formerly homeless in a previous year, according to the Institute for Children, Poverty & Homelessness (ICPH).
The report is an in-depth examination of how homelessness hurts the educational attainment of students in New York City. Housing advocates are likely to be quoting from the report for years, as they push for more affordable housing development in New York City.
